Your name. 君の名は Kimi no Na Wa (Fin~.)

I don't usually do this, or i should say this is the first time?
But anyway, I just watch this movie name "Your Name" Kimi no Na Wa.
I have to make a review and putting my opinion on this because it is sooooo good
But i will not cover the whole films, i will more like writing the point i found important or I like.
Of course *spoiler alert*, please if you just happen to pass by this blog,
I recommend you to watch the film before reading.

Your Name. it is directed and written by Shinkai Makoto 新海 誠
It is currently ranking No. 1 in the myanimelist, and even bested "Spirited Away" by Miyazaki Hayao
in Japan's box office. (I like them both)
I have always been a fan of Makoto since the release of his older film "Voices of Distant Star"
The most well known of his film before "Your Name" it should be "5 cm Per second"
If you are like me that follow Makoto's films, "Your Name" feels like combine 2 of his master piece together, 5cm Per second and Children who chase lost voice( 星を追う子ども). and create a grand master piece.
Where Sci-Fi and love story combine.
But over here i have to stop for a little, before getting into "Your Name".
Children who chase lost voice, was a bit off from the literal translation, it should be "Children who chase Star", I am stating this because, Makoto seems like to  use "Star" to interpret or describe his film, even in "Your Name" and some of his older films.

Your Name started off at a story between a village girl and city boy,
At the beginning of the films, both female and male of the protagonist has already grown up,
And narrating how they forgotten an important dream and couldn't shook away the feeling of they losing something important.
This opening is very Makoto Style, where the protagonist narrate poem-like story, and showing off the incredible art style, similar with another of his film, The Garden of Words.
Although personally thinking, "Your Name" indeed has same incredible arts, but unlike Garden of Words, it also have a lot of content, in contrast, Garden of Words seems to be have a lot empty spaces
I am saying this because Shinkai Makoto has always been criticized that he put more attention on the art than the content (yes all of his creation has very nice art)

The story continue by the boy protagonist named "Taki (滝)" and the girl protagonist
"Mitzuha (みつは or 三叶)" switched body.
okay here i have to stop again, i found this is a incredible touch by Makoto,
usually in Japan will ask for name by using 君の名前は kimi no namae wa
but for the title it use 君の名は Kimi no Na Wa, the difference is asking for a full name(first), and asking only the name (second),
For example Shinkai Makoto, Shinkai is the family's name and Makoto is the person name,
And in the whole film, both protagonist, keep calling each other and written only by name, and not by the family's name ( in Japan calling others name usually is very close friend or family, for other usually will use the family name and add "san" or "kun") or combine of both. They only use their name : Taki and Mitsuha

but anyway lets moving on,
whats the first thing when woke up in a girl's body? of course fondle the chest!!

and here i will skip the story when till Taki woke up in Mitsuha body at the day Grandma wanted to pray at the God's Shrine, because that part explain the story quite a bit, at the morning in the news saying that there is a comet will passby between the moon and earth, and will be visible by the human eye, then later going to the shrine grandma says that the time its like the braided cord they make, converge and take shape, twisted and tangle, ravel and unravel.
More like saying the time flow is not constant, it is possible ravel with another time, *takenote its important in later story*
After the prayer, they went on a hill that can overview the small town and just in the Kawatare-Doki (twilight [doki mean time])
and grandma asked Taki who is in Mistuha body, "are you dreaming?", then he woke up, and they never switch body after that.

When Taki woke up in his body again, he found out that Mitsuha using Taki body has make date with Okudera (a senpai Taki has crush on), then the scene switch back to Mitsuha was preparing to school, even though she is the one who setup the date, but she cry out most likely out of jealously and actually fall in love to the boy she switched body with.
Go back to Taki again where he is having a data with senpai and it wasn't going so well, in the end of the date, Okudera senpai said to Taki, she knows he used to have a crush on her, but now he has someone he likes, he denies it, but clearly he is. Afterwards, he tried to call and email to Mitsuha, but none of it get thru.

Okay, after that here is the story turning point, and the pieces is starting to fall in together, it switch back to Mitsuha, she cut her hair short, usually when girl broke up or have a mental breakup they will do that, but the story does not explain at that point. (here is the point they narrate they no longer switch body)

Here i will skip out a little bit till Taki is trying to find Mitsuha since they no longer switch body and his call or mail never get to her. with his memory he draw the town, and asked around finally found it, it is called Itomori Town, but it was destroy by the comet (the comet in news broke into 2 pieces, the smaller piece fall into japan and hit Itomori Town), and the comet killed 500 + along with the town ... 3 years ago. But he was so sure they were communicating few days ago by switching body and writing down diary in each other phone, as he open the diary in his phone, the diary is deleting itself one by one till none of its left and he even starting to forget Mitsuha's name.

Here is like the god playing a part or the time is trying to correcting itself, and Makoto bring it up just nice, it is giving a feeling to the viewer the pain in the heart feeling, "make you to forget one you are trying to remember so hard."

To confirm if Mitsuha is alive, he went to some library and look for the name who died in the Itomori town's tragic, and found out she is in the list.  At this point he even question his own sanity, if it is all delusional.
Its shocking when i watched till this part, how nicely Makoto bringing the climax point, in here we can see that Taki is wearing the braided cord on his arm, and when asked about it, he only remember that a friend given it to his long time ago that he does not remember but he did remember what grandma told him when he is switched to Mitsuha body, time is like that braided cord, it ravel and unravel. thus, he remember the shrine, and went to it.

Okay here, i have to bring up the Children who chase lost voice, if you ever watch this film, in this point it is kinda similar, in the Children who chase lost voice, there is a special place where it is an entrance to a different world, and in "Your Name", that shrine is where the time ravel. So Taki able to switch body again with Mitsuha at this point at the day where the comet will drop (it drop into Itomori in night time), and later of the story also explain by the grandma, Mitsuha's family (they are shrine maiden) both her mom and grandma able to switch body with someone else like Mitsuha did.

Here Taki has switched to Mitsuha body, where he try to bring everyone into the school area to avoid the comet blast (school did not destroy when Taki visit in his time), and Mitsuha awake in the shrine then walk up and witnessed the destroyed Itomori Town.

I am going to skip again to the point where Taki found out, that the day before comet fall into Itomori, Mitsuha actually look for him in Tokyo. Now you know that their timeline is different, Taki did not know Mitsuha 3 years ago, and why Mitsuha cut her hair short.

every pieces has fallen together, i really like how Makoto bring the story little bit and little bit, and when you find out, it feels like a part of your heart being chipped of, painful.

Mitsuha found Taki in the train, she was so sure that Taki will know her because she and him switched body so many times, but we know that time Taki did not know her. She felt heart broken and feels like she got dumped. And before Mitsuha left, Taki ask her name, Mitsuha answer and giving him the braided cord she use it as hair tied.
In this scene, it totally bring up the feeling of disappointment, when you got your hope high of meeting someone who you assure knows you, but in the end, he did not. And one thing Makoto seems really like to put the story in train station or in the train, like 5cm per second did. Maybe because train station it's like the place to farewell? its where people say goodbye, where people travel far, the place where sadness and happiness converge.

And... i am going to skip again here, till the point they actually meet on the hill near the shrine,
How would they meet you ask? just like how story interpret, that place is like where the time is ravel and unravel, and so they finally meet but only for certain of time, the kawatare-doki (twilight),
I found this is very interesting, and Makoto really use absolute great way to put "Kawatare" this word into his story and also related to the film title.
In the early part of the film. in the class the teacher is explaining the word Kawatare & Kawatare-Doki / Tasogare & Tasogare-doki, in Japanese 他そ彼・彼は誰
Tasogare-doki/Kawatare-doki mean twilight, the time its neither day nor night, when the world blurs and one might encounter something not human (explained in the film)
and Tasogare / Kawatare 他そ彼・彼は誰 means who is that
See how good he put this, Kawatare in his film, and Kimi no Na Wa as title, okay here you might get confuse, you will understand in the later story,

When they finally meet, that scene really melts my heart, I was like, pleaseeee Makoto, give this a good happy ending, don't be like 5cm Per second. And just when i thought that, this happen...

Mitsuha wanted to get everyone to the safety, and Taki is trying to help, in that short time of meeting, they decide to write down their name on each other palm, so they will never forget, but just right before Mitsuha wrote down her name on Taki's palm, the Kawatare-Doki(twilight) ended, and shes gone, and they switch back to their original body. This is the most F888ed up part, then Taki couldn't remember her name and slowly forgetting why he is even here.
And on Mitsuha part, she rush back to the town trying to get everyone to safety while remember herself Taki's name. This is very sweet, but sad at the same time, when you knows that she will forget it soon no matter how hard she is trying to remember.
Up to the point where she already forgotten Taki's name, she is running around town trying to get everyone to safety, at some point she fell down, frustrated, and seems futile to save everyone, but she saw some writing on her palm, she must be thinking it written down his name, but instead, Taki wrote down すきな sukina, means like you/ love you, by far this is the sadness confess I saw, knowing someone you like also like you back but you slowly forgetting everything about him. Its fucked up.
And eventually, she saved the town, but lost the most precious memory about Taki.

Here i am going to skip lot more details, till the ending.
ULTIMATE SPOILER.

The ending, many people will says that its a good one, but or is it?

At the ending, it has been 5 years since the Itomori town get bombard by the comet, both of them has forgotten each other, but seems like some feeling still linger, then both of them taking train to somewhere, and here in the train again, they both meet each other in a different train that passby together, see how Makoto like to use train as the story turning point(pun not intended)
And they both realize he and she is the one they are looking for, and the feelings linger.
As soon as they got out of train they look for each other, and in the end, they did meet.
even they saw each other but none have the courage to speaks first, worrying its only one sided,
I was like, i am so done if none of them speak, and just go like how 5cm per second ended,
but luckily it did not end like that, finally Taki spoke out "Haven't we met before?"
and Mitsuha turn around crying and answer "I thought so too!"
YES finally some good ending, but here i am going to add my opinion in here,
indeed this consider a good ending, but even though they meet again, their memory which they know each other still not there, not even the time when Mitsuha first meet Taki in Tokyo,
For me memory is the bond of a pair, without memory, one can only call other as stranger.
But at least in the end they meet again,
For me, it is bitter sweet ending, a bitter sweet one.

end

Here is the ending song of the Movie, i like it so much, its call "Nandemonaiya"
Means "Its Nothing"
enjoy
